Revisited Sites. As part of our new Revisited Sites series, this project marks the first return visit to one of our most memorable restorations. It involved the complete restoration of 13 large stone arches at the head of a lake on a country estate. Twelve of the arches were no longer standing, and the original stones had been stored in a barn for many years. In preparation for Remembrance Day, we were called in to carry out a sympathetic clean to remove algae and surface detritus using non abrasive methods. We also repointed open joints with lime mortar across the memorial, plaques and surrounding plinths. While on site, we were additionally asked to survey the memorial to identify the source of potential structural cracking, informing a future phase of remedial works. Here's how the memorial looked before and after our cleaning.

Further to the road traffic accident involving this Grade II listed bridge, the existing stonework was recovered, examined, and sawn down so that as much original material as possible could be retained and reused. Any shortfall was supplemented with new stone carefully selected to match the existing. All stone was then transported back to site and reinstated within a controlled, traffic‑managed working area. Sympathetic cleaning was carried out using a non‑invasive steam‑cleaning technique to remove algae and surface detritus. Due to the nature of the fountain, this process revealed a significant build‑up of limescale. The next stage of the restoration will involve repointing the open joints and removing the limescale, with the aim of reinstating the fountain after several years of being out of operation.
