A recent project we have been working on is the restoration of Brackenhurst Main Hall in Southwell, Nottinghamshire. After removing the slate roof, we uncovered a hidden opening that revealed earlier alterations made to create a lower ceiling in part of the old hall. When that ceiling was installed, the original cornice and wallpaper details were concealed and long forgotten — until now. Finding these preserved features was a wonderful surprise and one of the real privileges of this work: uncovering a building’s history, revealing what time has hidden, and restoring it for future generations. Discover how the restoration develops in part 7.
