Historic Hall Restoration 3 - Raking out and Re-pointing to the Chimneys

Rake out and re point on chimneys

A recent project we have been working on is the restoration of Brackenhurst Main Hall in Southwell, Nottinghamshire

Boasting ten chimneys but in need of restoration we set to work on restoring the brickwork of the chimney stacks: raking out and repointing in lime mortar. Some of the stacks had been previously capped so we added a new flaunch around the pots to reseal it efficiently. In other cases, they had been left open so we added new clay terminals, allowing for aeration of flue whilst reducing the risk of weather such as rain and snow getting in. The cracked and broken stonework around the terminal pots was also repaired.
