Historic Hall Restoration 3 - Raking out and Re-pointing to the Chimneys

A recent project we have been working on is the restoration of Brackenhurst Main Hall in Southwell, Nottinghamshire. With ten chimneys in need of attention, we restored the brickwork by raking out and repointing the stacks in lime mortar. Several stacks had been previously capped, so we added new flaunching around the pots to ensure a proper seal. Others had been left open, so we fitted new clay terminals to allow flue ventilation while preventing rain and snow ingress. We also repaired the cracked and damaged stonework surrounding the terminal pots. Discover how the restoration develops in part 4.
