A recent project we’ve been working on is the restoration of Brackenhurst Main Hall in Southwell, Nottinghamshire. With the lead paint safely removed, further restoration of the bell tower could begin. The oxidised cupola (copper dome) was carefully removed, and the internal timber structure rebuilt to ensure the new cupola would sit correctly. Moving down the tower, the arched section housing the bell was repainted using modern standardised paint, and a completely new bell frame was constructed to replace the deteriorated original metal and timber supports. The main trunk of the tower was then re‑clad in new lead, completing this stage of the restoration. Discover the next steps in our restoration of this historic hall in Part 13.
