Historic Hall Restoration 5 - Clearing the Roof space

Clearing the roof space

A recent project we have been working on is the restoration of Brackenhurst Main Hall in Southwell, Nottinghamshire

After removing the entire slate roof, we were able to inspect the current condition of the roof space beneath. There had been a mass build-up of debris within the void which is the accumulation of dust, dirt, and deterioration of the slate and wooden timbers over an approximation of 122 years. To clear the space safely safety suits with air fed hoods were worn during the removal process. Here you can see stages of the process from start to finish and now that the area is clear we can see other areas that need restoration. Such as, rotten timbers and deteriorated patches within the floor of the roof void.
