Historic Hall Restoration 5 - Clearing the Roof space

A recent project we have been working on is the restoration of Brackenhurst Main Hall in Southwell, Nottinghamshire. After removing the entire slate roof, we were able to assess the condition of the roof void beneath. Over roughly 122 years, a significant build‑up of dust, dirt and deteriorated slate and timber had accumulated within the space. To clear it safely, we wore full protective suits with air‑fed hoods during the removal process. These images show the stages from start to finish, and with the void now cleared, we can identify further areas requiring restoration, including rotten timbers and deteriorated sections of the floor within the roof space. Discover how the restoration develops in part 6.
